Buffalo Bill visits KOA Campground, Fancy Gap, Va.

Buffalo-Bill-web-1

It was our pleasure, this weekend to meet and talk with "Buffalo Bill" Leighton, and his wonderful wife "Dr. Gail". They were guests at the KOA Campgrounds here in Fancy Gap, Va. putting on a very interesting show for all the folks in this area.

After everyone had chili and hot dogs, Buffalo Bill started his evening with telling tales of the "Spirits of the Old West". His first act of the show was showing everyone the knifes used and how they were properly thrown. He even did a Speed Throwing show, where he threw and stuck 22 knifes in 30 seconds. I was very impressed with his ability at handling knives and hatchets.

The next part of the show, after explaining firearm safety to kids old and young, was his fast draw abilities. I must say, if Bill is not the fastest, he IS among the fastest in the world. He is the Cowboy Quickdraw World Champion of 2006. On one of his quick draws, he explained how to fire off 2 shots, and believe me, he was so fast, the 2 shots fired, looked like only 1 shot. He explained doing this, he has to wear a leather glove, because he uses his thumb for the first shot, then his little finger for the second shot. Without the glove, it cuts his little finger to pieces.

After the gun show, Buffalo Bill moved on captivating the audience with his special gift of handling many different Bull Whips. As shown in the photo above, he is able to cut the rose in Dr. Gail's hand with the quick crack of the whip. I would not have stood there holding the rose. I would have volunteered Betty for that job. Then he moved on to show cutting a rose off its stem while he held the rose over HIS head.

He finished the evening with a special photo session posing with the kids that watched and were amazed with his special show. He even brought back the child in me just watching and listening to him. After that was over, I was able to take the first photo in this blog of him, just for me. Betty and I then visited with Buffalo Bill, and Dr. Gale for the rest of the evening. We have now gained a very special friendship with these two very special people, and can't wait to visit them again at their home.

Not only is "Buffalo Bill" a teller of tall tales, showman, horsemen, rifleman, and among other things, but Bill is a graduate of the school of the Fast Gun, instructor in fire arms safety: rifle, shotgun & pistol. Instructor with whips, bull whips, Australian stock ships. Stage combat swordsman, and also Master Scuba Diver. He also served in the U.S. Navy, Coast Guard, and is a retired Deputy Fire Chief.

If any of you ever get the chance to see and meet Buffalo Bill, I strongly suggest you do so. I guarantee when you do, you will have a friend for life.

Busy at the Gap

Its been a while since we have had time to do a blog. We've been extremely busy with customers and doing the "Old Tyme" Photos.  Part II of our video on Welcome to Fancy Gap has been up on youtube for a while. If your interested, and haven't been at our store, you can view

 it here....

The "Old Tyme Photography has been a huge success. We have taken photos of people from all over the world, including bikers that enjoy riding the Blue Ridge Parkway.

When we started doing the photos, we decided that we wanted to be different from every other Old Tyme studio, not using the same backdrops that you see everywhere, of the saloon bar, or the poker table. The scenes that are most requested, are the out door shoots I am taking. I wanted them to look real, like they were actually shot over 100 years ago.

We still shoot indoors with fireplace and props as background, but outdoor shots are taking over. We have a ball doing these,  and if your traveling thru, be sure to stop in and enjoy your stay.

Sneak Peak from the Gap

Well we have been working our buns off in the last 10 days getting ready for our Grand Opening May 1st and 2nd. I thought you might like to have a sneak peak at what we have done so far.

store-front-after

I have got all signs and outdoor items in place, just a few more minor items, and the outside is finished. We have moved all the big heavy furniture, and have 90% of it in place. Still might need a few more tables for displaying linens and place settings. When we get more stock moved, we will have a better idea of filling in the blank spaces.

lower-level-1

This is the first main room you will enter the store in. Here we will have many different kitchen items along with linens, candles, and lighting accessories. The special gifts like wedding and baby will be displayed in the glass counter.

lower-level-2

Along with the kitchen items, we have many furniture items from Hutch's, tables, to Pie Safe's displaying everything for your kitchen or dining room.

In the upper level, we will feature our bath and bedroom lines, along with Americana, and baby items.

log-bedroom

Along with our Log Bedroom furniture, our country ruffle curtains will be a big feature. In this room, we will have 2 log beds and furniture, displaying different lines in bedding.

We will even have a special corner in the upper level just for the baby.

upper-level-2

We still have tons of work to do, and there are only 8 days left to get it done. We do hope that you have enjoyed our little sneak peak. Betty is hollering at me that break time is over, so I have to end here for now.  Hope to see you at our grand opening.....

Spring Decorating

It's really hard to get into the mood, for that spring decorating, with the weather changing so much. This last weekend in the 70's. Yesterday rain and snow, this morning woke up to a dusting, and they are calling for more of the white stuff.

This last weekend, we wanted to get into the mood for spring, so we emptied out what use to be our candle room, and started hanging new wallpaper. We are using textured stone on 2 walls, and log on the remaining walls.  Not finished yet, but so far, its looking really good. We have shot a video series on the tips and tricks of hanging wallpaper, so anyone can learn to DIY, and have it look like a pro hung it. With the time limits on YouTube, it will be a 5 part series, and we plan on making a DVD for the people interested in trying  the DIY.

We are not really sure, once we are finished with hanging the paper, what we will turn the room into. I know the Western look has come up, but that's not final yet. Part I of the series is live, and Part II will be live later on this afternoon. The rest of the series will be added daily this week, for all of you to see.

Part I viewed here.
