Run for the wall vets was here last night and left this morning.So sad to see them go, its always a pleasure for them to visit our town every year. We also had a wagon and horses passing through on their way to DC to stand up for Small Business and has a lot of questions for the guys in Washington, sure hope they get some answers.

We will be open this Saturday and Monday for all the visitors coming to town for the week end, and all of our locals too. Be sure and stop in and say Hi and see all the new goodies we have in stock!!!

Tornado Season Alive and Killing

With the last week of the biggest and most deadly Tornade break out in history, not to mention that May is the month for the most tornado activity of the year, we will try to help everyone with being prepared for the worst. FEMA, The Red Cross, and the Department of Homeland Security have for the last couple of months been trying to inform people to put together a "72 HOUR EMERGENCY KIT" for each family member in your household. In this article, we will try to help you with items you will need for this kit.

The first item needed is a bag, or backpack for all the items needed for your 72 hour emergency kit. It doesn't matter type of bag as long as it is big enough for the person to carry with all the items needed to get them through 72 hours of being without the things you are use to having like electricty, running water, and all the rest of the everyday comforts you and your family are use to.

A person needs 3 things to survive. 1. Water... Fema states that each person in a household will need 1 Gallon each for each day. Water weighs 8.8 lbs. per gallon, so it gets very heavy if you have to be on the move. If you have an available water source, you will still want to make sure it is safe to drink. You have different ways to purify water, wether it be boiling, chlorine, filter system, or purification tablets.

With boiling you will need a fire, a way to make fire, or a small light stove with tablets, as shown above. If you live in an area with plenty of trees and wood, then you will want in your pack, a small and light weight campers saw, also a fixed blade knife that can be used for spliting the wood you sawed for getting a self sustained fire for boiling your water, and cooking your food.

You will also need matches, or lighter, or flint striker of some kind to get the fire started. It is best to pack all 3 of these items along with cottonballs soaked in petroleum jelly, this will burn for some time letting you get your fire started faster whether it is raining, snowing, or a sunny day.

Next #2 you need food to survive. There are so many choices here that anything will work, but, you must keep in mind the weight of your emergency kit. Freezedried, dehydrated, Mountain House, or MRE (meals ready to eat) are the best. Prepackaged, and weigh very little, many can be packed in your kit and not even feel the weight of them.

#3 is shelter. You have to have shelter to survive, keeping your body out of the elements like rain or snow. This can be something as simple as a tent. I do stress that if you go this route, tents are heavy, and get heavier the bigger they are. With a family of 4-5 it takes a big tent which is heavy. I recommend that you split the tent pack among different people in your family, like having one carry the poles, another carry the tent fly, and another carry the tent itself. It will spread the weight out and not make a burden for one to carry.

More important items that is a must in every 72 hour emergency kit, #1 being a Medical kit, consisting of any item you feel will be needed for you and your family. Basic FirstAid kits can be purchased anywhere, and are complete with the basic items needed. Also, another important point, if you are trapped under debris, or lost, have a whistle with you in your kit. They are a life saver, if you could barely speak, you can still be heard for a 100 yards by blowing a whistle.

Another item that I urge you to keep in your kit would be a good compass and a map of your area. GPS systems are good, but, if you don't have batterys or signal is lost, then you will be lost also.

I would also recomend extra socks and underware in your kits, along with hygene items. Nothing can refresh your mind and spirit better then being able to wash and have a clean set of clothes to wear. Remember, you might only have a couple of minutes warning during the middle of the night, so it is BEST to keep your 72 hour emergency kit packed and close to where you can grab them in a little notice and go. Your life and the life of your family members depend on this. Always prepare for the worst, and pray for the best. One last note, I would put all important documents on a zip drive and keep that in your kit also. If a tornado hits in your area, you will need info showing that you live in that neighborhood so they will allow you in to check on your home and belongings.

I remember it yet,

All the goodies Momma cooked,

How can we forget?

For her to fix meals was always a pleasure.

My memories of Mother are always a treasure.

That old stove cooked three meals a day

Light bread on Fridays, cakes and pies

For the holidays.

Cooked hams, turkeys, and chickens with delight;

Many times used for canning till late at night.

The old stove heated the kitchen

On cold winter days.

It serves us so well in so many ways.

When we kids got home from school,

We always went looking

Straight to that old stove to see what was cooking.

An old iron pot that cooked the meat

Sat on the old stove, always cooking a treat.

Aromas of corn bread from the oven

You could smell ….

For us hungry kids, it sure cast a spell.

As my mind takes me back to the Good Old Days,

New Items for Spring

Well, now that spring is finally here, we have been receiving new items each day.

Most of the new items are being made by crafters right here in the good old USA. I must say, these are the best quality hand made items that we have seen in many, many years. We will be and are in the process of adding these items to our Web Site. While these are hand made, the item numbers are few, and do not stock huge amounts of these, (remember, these are not coming from China, so orders are not made by the dozens).

Many of these crafted items, are just to cute to pass up on. Also we have been getting different items like bottles and books, making our own labels, and adding them to the different items.

For our seasonal crafted items, not only will you see them in our store, but you can also find them on our Web Site.

We would also like to mention, that on June 3rd, July 4th, Aug. 5th they will be having car show and cruise, so we will be staying open late for these events. They will be on Main St. here in Wytheville, from 6:30-9:30 pm, we hope to see everyone here for those events.

For all you locals, this is the first time we have ever done this and will probably be the last!!!! :(

Starting Monday the 13th at 10:00 am ALL CHRISTMAS MUST GO!!!!!! Christmas Trees, Ornaments, Wreaths and more, anything that can't be used any other time of the year. I just don't think it is fair to wait till after Christmas to do this when you need it NOW. Don't worry we have more surprises in store for the day after Christmas, if there is anything left??? Its beginning to feel a lot like Christmas

Boy is it cold here in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, BURZY!!! Its been in the teens and 20's and that's just too cold for me. Well Thanksgiving is over and I sure hope everyone arrived back home safely and everyone has a warm place to sleep and had plenty to eat during the holidays.

Its time to get those Christmas Trees up and decorated. We have tons of handmade ornament's and Wreaths, so stop by and pick you some out before they all get gone. Don't you just love this time of year??
Time to celebrate Jesus Birth. We have some beautiful Handmade Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus.

We have lighted Snowmen Boxes, so neat to sit on your porch. We have LIMITED supply of Christmas Trees so hurry and get yours.

Christmas Open House

We had a Great Christmas Open House with everyone shopping and having a good ole time. Lots of merchandise flew out the door, some of it we can't get again, so you may be one of those people getting a "Special Gift" from Crocketts Country Store"

We have got more new stock in this week on different merchandise, so come in and check it out.

BAD NEWS

A lot of companies is going out of business at the end of this year and some of them are already gone, so some of our merchandise you will never see again, GONE!!!! So if you are lucky enough to get some of it before its gone, count yourself Blessed !! Also starting the beginning of the year UPS gets another rate increase of 5% , so you know what that means to all of us, HIGHER PRICES!!!!

We are going to be taking all of our borders off of our website starting the beginning of the year, so if you see some that you are interested in, you better get them now!!! A lot of the wallpaper companies has went out of business or sold out and the prices is getting so high that we can't resale the merchandise. We will be keeping all the border and wallpapers in stock in the store but not on the Internet at the present time, that we can keep at a reasonable price. We are all about keeping our prices low and its getting harder and harder to do. Most all of our Canisters sets is 1/2 off right now and those we won't be able to get again, they have been discontinued!!!!! Check them out on the web and also in the store.

We could not get the Primitive Christmas trees this year, the companies could not get them, so what we have is all we can get and won't be getting anymore. We have lots of new handmade ornaments, so get them while they last, and last but not least

3 More days to go and then the BIG DAY is here!!! Everyone has been been putting in long hours and working their fingers to the bone. Dan got all the lights put on the bushes and the columns wrapped in Greenery outside today while Little Betty Bell worked on all the Christmas Trees inside and she is still putting out all the new merchandise inside. We have one more load coming in and a BIG load of Handmades to pick up on Thursday. Wait till you see the new Mary and Joseph with Baby Jesus, YOU ARE GOIING TO LOVE THEM!!!!!! We also have some handmade snowmen and Red Cardinals with Wytheville, Va on them. We have Va Tech ornaments also. We have got you covered!!!!
Oh I almost forgot about the Handmade Gingerbread ornaments and cookies.
We also will be engraving Christmas Tree Ornaments this year, so get yours early (Limited Supply)

We have already been selling Christmas Trees, Snowmen and ornaments and we havent even started unpacking yet. Everyone seems to be in Christmas mood this year. Everything is kinda looking empty right now, got to get busy getting all the Christmas Goodies out!!!!! Fall is over and Christmas begins. Don't forget out Christmas Open House on November 13 !!!

What a GREAT FALL OPEN HOUSE

We was busy all day with tons of people shopping and eating. Everyone was having a great time. We had 20% OFF of all FALL items. The customers loved the Spiced Apple Cider and we sold tons of it. People was happy and ready for the fall season and some cool weather. I love it when people are happy!!! We had to stay open a hour later so everyone could get their shopping finished.
Now we can't wait till Christmas Open House!!!! NOVEMBER 13, thats just around the corner.
We will start putting out lots of new products this week for Christmas giving, we have no choice our stock room is running over and there is more to come!!!! WOW what a Christmas it will be. We got in tons of Homespun Material in different colors this week and lots of lodge items not to mention all the Treenware. We are going to have so many nice gifts at affordable prices, you are not going to believe it, so let the shopping begin!!!! We have lots of gifts for $10.00 - $20.00

Crafters is already starting on Christmas so it will be hard to get Fall items in again. We are trying to carry as many MADE IN THE USA items as we can get. We are so determined to put Americans back to work!!! One crafter at a time. We are getting handcrafted Wood items also.

Don't forget we have started carrying Military Items and the new Dog Tag Machine will be arriving in the next week or so. We have had so many customers begging for this. We also have Camo Tarps, Camping Stoves and Clothing and anything else that you can imagine. We also take Special orders for kids and Adults too. We order weekly on the Camo items and the kids are loving this. We have Military Boots in stock also, if we dont have it, we can get it!!

Went to a 50th Wedding Anniversary of some dear friends. There was so many people there you couldnt shake them with a stick. They had so much food that they could have fed a army!!!! Everyone was dancing and having a good ole time. I got to see so many friends and customers that I had not seen for awhile. Its so good to be back home!!

Happy 50th Anniversary to Dolly and John Williams

They was the sweetest couple with their dancing and feeding each other cake and those sweet little kisses!!!!

Don't forget the BIG Saturday at APPLEBEES, the Masonic Lodge will be serving pancakes at the Wytheville AppleBees, be sure and get there early.

I got the saddest phone call that I could have ever received from a small business. I have been selling Country Ruffled Curtains for 15 years and they are the top of the line handmade curtains. This small business was started by a mother and daughter, when the mother retired the daughter kept the business going. She has now decided to close the business and take care of her parents and run a dog grooming business. I am so sorry if you wasnt lucky enough to own some of these beautiful handmade curtains. I know a lot of my customers was lucky enough to own some of these curtains and they was always telling me about how long they had them and how they still look new.
No one knows unless you own a business how hard it is to get product anymore, its a long process and most of the time at least a 90 day wait. We have so many business that has closed their doors and it is always sudden so we dont have the chance to stock up, so if you see it, you better get it because it might be your last chance.
Companies are not coming our with a lot of new product, so you may not get that special color you are looking for and may have to settle for 2nd choices. This is just the way things are right now.
We will be picking up a new line of country ruffles if someone is interested in them but as usual we will not carry them in stock, it will be by SPECIAL order only.
We will be getting samples in the next few weeks.

WOW, What a day!!! Its was great and everyone was so happy to see us back in Wytheville. We was really busy all day with people standing in line waiting to be checked out. Thanks to Courtney and Angie for helping Dan out today, it sure was nice to have breaks. I was so happy to see all of my customers and friends that I havent seen in ages.

The Count Down Begins

Time is coming too fast and yet to much left to do. Betty ended back up in the ER last night, the Doctor called her and told her that her White Blood Count was going back up and she needed to find out why. She has a abscessed tooth and was taking antibotics that was not working, she has been in a lot of pain this week, so off to the ER she goes again!!!! This time they changed her antibotics and this morning it seems she is starting to feel better, so what can happen next??? Today we will work on getting more of the store straightened up and more new products put out. Can't wait to see how happy all of our customers is going to be!!!!
Tomorrow it will be loading the last of whats left in Fancy Gap and cleaning up the building for the new owners. Part of it will have to go in Storage and the other part in the store.
We sure hope all of our customers buy BIG at the GRAND Opening on August 7th because we still have a lot of product to put out but no where to put it. We will keep you posted this week and a mailing is in the works if you are on our Snail Mail List, if not please follow our BLOG and FOLLOW us on FACEBOOK, we keep everyone updated in those 2 areas.

Boy what a Monday we had!!! Little Betty Bell was giviing her little legs a work out, she was like a busy bee all day running from one room to another!!! She got 2 room finished and finally left at 8 pm. Its all coming together, slow but getting there. Dan loaded and unloaded all day, things going to storage and things coming to the store, what a day!!!
We got our signs yesterday from Pack Racing in Independence, they do a great job and now they are working on our Big Sign for the post out front, repainting and lettering it. So watch for our new sign in the fron yard.
We got to talk to Danny our mailman yesterday, he stopped by to pick up all the packages that we shipped for the website. Website is picking up daily and so glad we have that source of income. Please know that our website is safe and secure and we pay out bunches to make it that way. So remember we sell in 2 locations so if you see it and want it, you better get it. Some things we can't get again.

Oh my Goodness, it is Monday again!!!! Its raining outside and boy do we really need it , the grass was so dry and the heat was miserable!!! Everyone worked so hard yesterday getting another load out of the Fancy Gap store, its loaded on the trailer waiting for the rain to stop so the guys can get it unloaded and figure out where to put it ????? Its slow moving but we will get there by August 7th. Things are starting to shape up and take a whole new look. It is starting to get really exciting to see things come together. Oh the goodies that we have for our customers they are going to be so surprised!!!! We can't hardly wait to see our customers on August 7th, its pretty darn lonely not having a store open this week, this is the first time in 15 years that the store has been closed even through sickness and deaths we have never had to close, so its getting pretty lonely without our customers. Well its Saturday again and everyone got a lot done yesterday but was wore out last night. JW went to Smokey's BBQ and picked up BBQ for everyone and it was Yummy!!! Everyone wanted to take a nap after eating but work must go on. They willl be loading trailers and taking to storage today and Courtney will be working like a busy little bee getting things all spruced up. They won't let me touch anything since they don't want me back in the hospital again. Things will come together in the end I am sure. Dan got our mailbox put up so we can get our bills!!!! The signs will start going up soon but we are not anywhere near ready to open, just stirring a little excitement. Looks like the Farmers Market is really busy again this Saturday, it is so exciting to see so many people come out and support the farmers.

Betty Back Home from Hospital

Well, I am happy to say, that I just went and picked Betty up from the hospital this morning. If you didn't know, I had to take her to the emergency room early Sunday morning, and they admitted her then. After they put her in her room, I ran back to wytheville, unloaded stock from the van, loaded our personal belongings on the trailer, and hauled to storage, then took the trailer to fancy gap, so I could get it loaded with stock and furniture.
Monday, we got rain all day, which was good for me, giving me the chance to tear apart some displays, packing stock and furniture, and dismantling apple crates so we would have a starting point in setting up the Wytheville store again.
Tuesday, I spent all day loading the trialer in the rain, and after I closed the store at 5, I hauled the trailer to Wytheville, and then headed to the hospital to see Betty for her birthday.
Hopefully, by next week, we can start to get the Wytheville store displays started so we know what stock and furniture we will need next. Will keep everyone posted on our progress........

We finally got some rain and it has cool down a bit. We are still working on moving Crocketts Country Store back to Wytheville to its old location on Main Street and everyone is so excited about it. We have been getting visits and phone calls galore and can't wait to get the store open and going again. Its going to feel so good to get home and back where we belong. We are still adding to the website and we have so many new items for our cutomers to purchase. We support AMERICAN made and we have been buying up handmades and one of a kinds.

Another Hot Day in Southwest Virginia

Its been another hot day in Southwest Va. We are so praying for some cool weather and rain, it is getting so dry here.
I have been under the weather today, not feeling so good, so may bugs going around and of course I dont want to miss anything so I think I got a touch of it also. Sure hope I feel better tomorrow, so much to do and so little time.

Well Dan got 2 loads unloaded this morning before going back to Fancy Gap to open up the store there. We have been busy here trying to clean and unload boxes, what a day. We have about 10 boxes unloaded and decided to take a break and have some pizza. Its been nice and cool inside and Thank Goodness we dont have to go outside. Hope everyone is staying cool today. I know Dan will be packing up more boxes all day but at least he is where it is cool, its just the packing the trucks and trailers that is so HOT, even late at night and early in the AM. We are making progress, SLOW but at least its progress. Well better get back to cleaning and unpacking before we all get fired!!

Hump Day

Guess I will be making a trip to FG today to bring back some office supplies so I can get some bills paid and mailed before postage goes up again!!!! The P.O hasnt learn yet that they also have to be competitive with other shippers, this price increase is really going to hurt our websites once again!!!! URGH I dont think people realize that they must buy more than a couple items to equal out a good shipping rate for them. They will buy one item and the shipping is higher than the item they bought. Wish we had a way to teach them that the more they buy, the shipping will equal its self out since most people are on a sliding scale for shipping. Well so much for shipping, I think I better get busy and go find some boxes and head out to the Gap. We are now Open at the Gap on Wednesdays and CLOSED on Sundays, God deserves one day from us and we need the rest anyway to re-coop. So the store at the Gap is Open MON-SAT 10:00 to 5:00 The store in Wytheville will re-open on August 7th~~~~ We are getting so excited!!!!!

Today everyone is resting and giving their backs a break, its was all heavy items yesterday.Talk about groaning and moaning, I heard a bunch of it. My son and daughter-in-law JW Harrell, Courtney Harrell ,Bill Bane, Dan Boxberger and my grandson AJ all worked their hinneys off yesterday trying to get things moved. Everyone went home tired and hurting. What a way to spend a 4th of July!!!!! :( Now its getting the store all spruced up and ready to start decorating. Well everyone started out early this morning, loading and unloading. What a day. 3 loads went in storage buildings. One trailer unloaded and ready to get going again. Thanks to my Son, J.W. Harrell and some great friends which includes Bill Bane, Dewey and Frances Richmond, what we would do without friends???? Everyone was really tired and called it night so they can get going again on Sunday. Taking tomorrow off to rest and enjoy family. We have 30 days to vacate the building in Fancy Gap and get it all moved back to Wytheville for a RE-GRAND OPENING. We are so excited to be back home!!!!! We had wanted to move back home but kept turning it over in our minds and praying about it, well God gave us a answer and he made it very clear when the owners of the building come to Dan and said" WE HAVE SOLD THE BUILDING", Dan called and was a nervous wreck and couldn't quit shaking. I said Dan" God answered our prayers, why are you so upset"??? Things have started to calm down now and we hope all of our friends at Fancy Gap will keep shopping with us as we make this move and we can't wait for them to see out BIG Historical House located on 475 Main Street, Wytheville, Va. in the beautiful Historical District, located across from The old LOG HOUSE Restaurant and Farmers Daughter and the Great Quilt Shop that has so many great quilt pieces and more.

Seems like winter was here forever, then a few nice weeks, and now, back to cold, fog, and rain. Our hearts go out to the people who have suffered from the latest floods and tornadoes. We do hope that Jim and Arlene Goulet made it back home after their visit here with us, safe and sound.

The first session of Jazz on the Mountain , for this summer had to be canceled, due to reports of bad weather. Don’t forget, they will be playing every 2nd Saturday of each month.

A reminder, this is the Parkways 75th Anniversary, and hope that everyone can give it a visit this year.

Our new line in Military and camping, has been a big hit. It was started for the men, but seems like the ladies are liking it also. We have ordered and now have in stock for the women and kids every thing from handbags, clothes, caps, to backpacks for the student. Both Betty and I are working to get each and everyone of these new items on the web site.

We know how hard it is for the ladies to shop with their husbands with them, how they feel rushed and not getting to see every item Crocketts Country Store has to offer to them. So a couple of months ago, we started asking the husbands what they would like us to stock for them. The most answered was the camo gear for hunting and camping along with their 4-wheelin activities.

So here is what is new for the “Men” at Crocketts Country Store. We have added a Military/Hunting line just for them.

Enough of the Snow Already……..

Well, let me start out by saying, “WE ARE SICK OF SNOW”!!!!!!! We here at Crocketts Country Store, have been pounded with snow seems like on a daily basis. Starts out rain, turning to snow, then rain on top of the 18”. Then few days later, more snow, with 50 mph winds gusting to 70+ knocking out power for 2 days, and now again this morning more snow. When will it ever end????

With everyone still snowed in, and road crews trying to keep roads open, we have received new stock, and are busy redecorating store, and adding new stock to web site.

This is our newest line, that covers your bedding and dining linens, they have some very nice spring colors.

Betty has been very busy painting items to match the new colors on this line for some excellent accessories.

Hopefully, if the snow ever melts before the 4th of July, everyone can come in to check them out. If your planning your summer vacation, don’t forget this year is the Blue Ridge Parkways 75th Anniversary, and they have some very exciting events planned for this event.

We would also like to announce, that Jim and Arlene Goulet, producers of the BRP DVD will return this spring to spend a couple of days with us promoting their Top Selling DVD on the complete Blue Ridge Parkway Tour. The One Flaw In Women

By the time the Lord made woman, He was into his sixth day of working overtime. An angel appeared and said, 'Why are you spending so much time on this one?' The angel was astounded at the requirements. 'Only two hands!? No way! And that's just on the standard model? That's too much work for one day. Wait until tomorrow to finish.'

'But I w on't, ' the Lord protested. 'I am so close to finishing this creation that is so close to my own heart. She already heals herself when she is sick AND can work 18 hour days.'

The angel moved closer and touched the woman. 'But you have made her so soft, Lord.' 'She is soft,' the Lord agreed, 'but I have also made her tough. You have no idea what she can endure or accomplish.'

'Will she be able to think?', asked the angel. The Lord replied, 'Not only will she be able to think, she will be able to reason and negotiate.'

The angel then noticed something, and reaching out, touched the woman's cheek. 'Oops, it looks like you have a leak in this model. I told you that you were trying to put too much into this one.'

'That's not a leak,' the Lord corrected, 'that's a tear!' 'What's the tear for?' the angel asked.

The Lord said, 'The tear is her way of expressing her joy, her sorrow, her pain, her disappoi n tment, her love, her loneliness, her grief and her prid e.' The angel was impressed.. 'You are a genius, Lord. You thought of everything! Woman is truly amazing.'

And she is! Women have strengths that amaze men. They bear hardships and they carry burdens, but they hold happiness, love and joy. They smile when they want to scream. They sing when they want to cry. They cry when they are happy and laugh when they are nervous. They fight for what they believe in. They stand up to injustice. They don't take 'no' for an answer when they believe there is a better solution. They go without so their family can have. They go to the doctor with a frightened friend. They love unconditionally. They cry when their children excel and cheer when their friends get awards. They are happy when they hear about a birth or a wedding. Their hearts break when a friend dies. Going to be a White Christmas

Looks like we will have a White Christmas this year with the 12” of snow we received yesterday and last night. Interstate’s and roads are Closed along with the Blue Ridge Parkway, while the state crew’s are out working to open them back up.

Not sure as of yet, what store’s will be open today here at Fancy Gap……..

Come to the mountains and experience an “Old Fashion Christmas” in Fancy Gap, Virginia. This event is our kick off to the 75^th. Anniversary of the Parkway” in 2010. Visit our Blue Ridge HOST Visitor’s Center for information about the entire year’s festivities.

Enter to win “The Fanciest Ornament Contest”. $75.00 Cash Prize in Two Categories: (under 12 years of age) & (12 years & older). Bring handmade ornaments to any of the following shops by 5:00pm December 4^th.The Fancy Gap Dress Shop, Treasure Potts, Fancy Gap Designs, Crocketts Country Store or Treasure Potts II, An Artisan Gallery. Contest winners will be announced at Noon on Saturday December 5^that the Pickin’ Porch.

Our retail stores will be open till 9:00 P.M. offering extended shopping hours for our visitors. Come early and enjoy a full day of shopping with carolers starting at 11:00 A.M. offering their special brand of Christmas Music on our Pickin’ Porch. The best carolers will be recognized with prizes for first and second place. Winners will be evaluated on period costumes, music presentation, and spirit.

AT 2:00 P.M. we will be offering “Story Telling” which is a tradition among mountain people. Afterwards, a contest will be held for contestants to tell their own stories representing the heritage or history of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Prizes will be offered for first and second place – in two age groups (5 to 12, 13 and older).

Free refreshments will be provided at most retail shops. Christmas candies, cookies, brownies, and other treats will be available along with hot drinks to warm your spirits. Of course, it wouldn’t be a perfect day without a visit from Santa to wish everyone a happy holiday season. We will also have hot chocolate and hot apple cider at our “Smores Party” for everyone.

A youth park will provide activities such as face paintings and a Christmas tree decorating party.

Anne Whisnant will be on site to sign her book Super Scenic Motorway – “A Blue Ridge Parkway History”. Her husband, David E. Whisnant, and she will also be signing their new children’s book – “When the Parkway Came”. Don’t miss this opportunity to meet and talk to the authors and get your copy of both books signed.

The Final Countdown

Well, here we are to the final countdown, for our Christmas Open House. We are running around like chicken with our heads cut off.

We are busy unpacking items from our crafters, and getting them priced.

All of them are just as cute as can be. A lot of time and effort went in to making these items. We also have some great gift items for that special someone.

Also, we are going to be giving away 4 Gift Certificates, and each one has a $25.00 value. You won’t to miss out on this for this Holiday Season.

Final Touches

The last couple of weeks have been real busy here at the store. We’ve been packing up the fall stock and unpacking and building displays for the upcoming Christmas Open House next Saturday and Sunday. Man it is a lot of work.

With getting all the trees decorated, and some of the small touches, time flies by before you know it.

We still have a lot of work yet to do before next weekend, like finishing the outdoor decorations, and doing a couple more Christmas trees, getting out some more of the Christmas stock, boy I am tried already.

As the weekend gets closer, we will be telling more of the plans going on. We hope everyone will attend and join in on the fun. We will be giving out special gifts randomly through out the Open House weekend, so you won’t want to miss a chance at that. Remember, Saturday and Sunday, the 14th and 15th.

Starting to Look and Feel like Fall

Well, here at the Gap, its starting to look and feel like Fall. The leaves are starting to change their colors, and the temps are starting to drop. Maybe even a chance for snow this coming Saturday.

We have decided that to be fair to our customers, that do not have the chance to visit our store, this year that we would add some of our Fall items on our web site. The photos you will see here are just a small amount of the items we will be listing on the web site in the next few days. Many of these items, are handcrafted, by some of our friends, and I am sure that there will be a big interest in these items. I hope those of you not able to visit our store will check these items out, as supplies are limited, being they are handcrafted here in the USA.

And on another note, Betty has started tearing the store apart, trying to figure out how we will be decorating for our up coming Christmas Open House. We are talking to the Blue Ridge Chapel Baptist Church about attending our open house again, and maybe making soup, like they did with the apple butter at our fall open house. We will keep you advised on that. I don’t think we will be able to have the live music on the porch, due to the weather, might be to cold keeping the instruments in tune. But we will keep everyone updated on what is going on…… More to come later…..

Our Newest Line Just Arrived

We have just received our newest line from the “Black Crow Candle Co.” this week. We are sorry they did not arrive in time for our Fall Open House like we had hoped, but they are here at last.

These candles look and smell wonderful and they come in many different sizes to fit your needs and price range.

Not only in stock are the candles, but we also carry their reed diffusers, and sprays.

And to finish off this unique line, are the many different scents in tarts for all of you who love using your tart burners.

Now that the fall open house is over, in the next few weeks comes the work in bringing out the newest Christmas inventory, and building all the displays, and I know everyone is looking forward to this. As we start getting everything organized, we will be taking photos keeping everyone updated on our progress. So stay tuned for that………

We would like to start out by thanking everyone who attended. It was perfect weather for our Fall Open House. Sorry to say, we were so busy I wasn’t able to take any photos except a couple, or do any video. The store was packed……

We would like to thank the members of the Blue Ridge Chapel Baptist Church, who started making the apple butter at 6:00 am Saturday morning. Thank you for the jar you gave us, its excellent, and I love apple butter. We hope you had a huge success, and again Thank You for your generous help in making our Fall Open House so special.

We would also like to thank Charles and Margaret from Treasure Potts across the street, for being so generous with the parking, as seen in the photo, both parking lots were packed all day….

We would also like to give a very special Thank You to Jim and Arlene Goulet. They traveled all the way from Lead Hill Ark. to autograph, and explain how they videoed the American Road Blue Ridge Parkway DVD, which has been a huge success in our store. Its one DVD you will want to have in your collection. They are in the works for their next video that I am sure will be just as good as the present DVD, if not better…… We will be adding the links for their web and blog sites in the near future, so everyone can learn what’s happening with American Road…….

And last, but not least, we want to thank Shari at Homespun and Primitives, for the beautiful fall display she crafted, to be given away for our drawing. It was absolutely gorgeous. And the winner was Santana Bell from Rural Retreat Va., we know you will be so happy with this gift, Congrats.

Update for our Fall Open House

I was informed yesterday, that the church will start setting up Friday night and be cooking all night long, also they will be making apple butter on sight in our yard in front of our studio. I told Betty I will spend my money on the B-B-Q sandwiches, I can eat a ton of them.

Betty also informed me that Dee at Fancy Gap Designs, will be serving refreshments all day, so I want everyone to stop by her shop and say Hi, while your in Fancy Gap.

And for the early shoppers, that will not be able to attend our Fall Open House, We started adding our new stuff on to the web site yesterday, and will continue to add more daily. Here’s a sneak peak of the items I have got on.

These are the snowballs Betty worked on all week, their are 6 in each bag, and she inform me these are made with Mica.

And of course what would fall be with out the Pumpkin Spice Pods. Man, do these smell Yummy…

Fall Open House

Well, we’ve been busy getting everything ready for our up coming Fall Open House……

We spent the last week getting all the outdoor decorations ready. Betty has been real busy making the milk chocolate candied apples.

The date for the Fall Open House is Oct. 3rd and 4th. On the 3rd, starting at 3:00 p.m. their will be live music on our porch. For every customer bringing in a new customer in to our store, you and your friend will receive 20% savings on all items purchased.

Also, a little birdie told us that the Blue Ridge Chapel Baptist Church, might be here with Barb-B-Q and Apple Butter.

And it that’s not enough, Carol at The Gap Deli across the road, informed us that anyone showing a receipt from Crocketts Country Store, will get a 10% discount, on some of the BEST tasting food on the Parkway.

With all this work going on, Betty has some how managed to find time to make bags of snowballs, that will be introduced at out Christmas open house. You won’t want to miss out on these…..

Well it’s getting close to that time of year again, to start planning for our Fall Open House. We are really excited about our new Fall stock.

We are getting ideas in our heads now, and setting the Date for Oct. 3-4 2009. As our plans come together, and the dateline gets closer, we will be telling you more about it.

So you will want to keep checking our blogs, to learn more about the exciting things we will be doing this year.

BRP DVD a BIG Success

It appears that the Blue Ridge Parkway DVD is a Huge success…

We knew we would be selling them on the website, but wanted to see how they would sell in the store. WOW, were we amazed how fast they are going out the door.

By the end of the first day of this remarkable DVD being on display on our counter, we were down to only 3 left. Luckily enough, Arlene and Jim stopped by on their way back to Arkansas, and left us another case of DVD’s.

This is truly “One of a Kind'” DVD. It covers the complete Parkway going North to South, not missing any of the beautiful views from the Parkway. From sunshine, fog and rain, you get the feeling that you are truly driving yourself down the parkway.

We have the DVD running through a monitor on our counter for everyone in the store to see, and once they start watching it, they purchase the DVD for their own. If you can’t make it into the store for this, it can be purchased on our website.

Supplies are limited, as their were only 900 DVD’s made, so you don’t want to hesitate on this item. And so far, they can only be purchased at Crocketts Country Store.

Needing to make Room

Well with all the Fall out, and Christmas on its way soon, we are needing to make room for all of our Christmas stock that we will soon be making displays for. In order to do this we have to move some big items to give us enough room for what we have in mind. To move these 2 items, we have put them on sale at 50% off. They are so big, that they will need to be picked up at our store location.

First is this beautiful solid oak hall tree. This is one nice item that would go perfectly in your hall, or any room in your home. It has 4 hooks for hanging coats or hats, and the bench seat lifts for storage of boots or blankets, underneath out of site. It is regularly priced at 1299.99, but now is reduced to 650.99.SOLD

Next is the Log Bedroom Suite. To buy every piece at regular price, would be $5000.00, but to make room for our Christmas stock, we are letting it go at $2500.00. Another Satisfied Customer

Well, we have another satisfied customer here at Crocketts Country Store. A customer came in and after many weeks of deciding on style, fabric color, and wood color, placed a special order with us for this beautiful Johnston Benchworks Chesapeake Bay Sofa.

It took JB’s a couple of weeks from start to finish of this product, and called us when finished. I drove the hour down to their shop, for pick up, and was shown nothing by kindness while my order was wrapped in cardboard, bubble pack, and plastic, not to mention even loading it .

Last night Betty and I delivered it to our customers home, unloaded and carried it into her home and placed it where it was intended to be. Needless to say, she was tickled pink.

It gives us a very good feeling being able to assist our customers with their needs, any way we can, our services with a smile. Something you won’t get a Wallyworld…..

Jazz on the Mountain a HUGE Success

For all of you that were here at the second show of “Jazz on the Mountain” you were given a real treat last night. It was a perfect night to sit and listen to some excellent Jazz Music.

There was a couple of musicians from N. C. that showed up for the evening, and we are glad they did. The standup bass player put on a real show, and was smoking hot. I understand that he played rock with electric bass, and self taught himself to play jazz with the up-right. The move to more progressive jazz with a good beat was a real crowd pleaser also.

2 different keyboard players attended the jam session, and both were amazing to listen to. I really hated for the evening to end.

I do hope that they return next month to join in the fun of these sessions.

Just a quick reminder, that Jazz on the Mountain, will be this coming Saturday evening, 8-8-09 from 5 pm to 8 pm. So anyone in the area, wanting to spend an evening listening to some excellent Jazz music, come on out to Crocketts Country Store. We are staying open late that evening for all that want to shop and listen to some good music.

Also would like to add, that Tom Bell has arranged a place for their Winter Venue. Cheryl & Mark Manning, owners of the Fancy Gap KOA Camp, have offered the use of their community hall for cold weather use as long as Tom schedules around their planned activities, which should not be very difficult. The facility will accommodate about 75 people, so all interested in this are welcome.

Tom also mentioned, that any musician, interested in joining in the fun, just bring your instrument, and come on down.

Feels like Fall is in the Air

Well we sure haven’t had much of a summer, not very many hot days, and dipping into the 50’s each night here, you get a sense of fall in the air.

Betty and I decided, maybe its time to start doing some Fall displays, you all know how Betty loves to tear up a store to build new displays. For the last couple of days, she has been busy cleaning apple crates, and building her displays.

I thought you all might like a sneak peek at what she has done so far. When the leaves start to turn here we will let everyone know, in case you want to come to this area for a visit. The colors are breath taking…

Adding More Stock

Well, we have been very busy this past few weeks, with all the new stock coming in, and getting stock moved over from Wytheville, we haven’t really had the time to blog. Now we need to update everyone on what is happening at Crocketts Country Store.

We knew we would have to build new displays for all of what’s coming in, and was lucky enough to get our hands on 295 apple crates in excellent shape. Let the fun begin.

We have started with doing a display in front of the counter using 100 crates, and it has taken us days to set this up. So far, so good.

By adding the new display, we are able to free up some room, in which we can build more displays, allowing us better use of our space for more stock.

It has changed the look of the store, but it is also helping to make the store look more spacious. Will leave with just a few more shots, and back to work. We will keep everyone updated on our progress, and show photos when we’re finished, if that is ever possible to be finished..

Jazz comes to Fancy Gap

Something different happened last night at Crocketts Country Store, we had a few of the local Jazz musicians set up on our porch and played for a few hours.

Tom Bell (bass player) had an idea of gathering local jazz musicians to set up and play some jazz, introducing the local and visiting people to the jazz style of music here in an area known for its bluegrass music.

The turnout was good, with a couple of keyboard players, guitar player, 3 different drummers, and of course, Tom playing his bass.

And yes the guitar player does look a lot like Eric Clapton, needless to say Eric didn’t show.

They are planning on playing on the 2nd Saturday of each month. If your in the area and want to listen to some excellent jazz, the come on down and bring your lawn chairs. You won’t be disappointed. Even though, they have never played or practiced together, they still produced a great sound.

Tom was even able to talk me into playing a couple of songs, of course I haven’t played any jazz in over 35 years, with my rock background, I did struggle a little. While the music was playing, Betty was busy inside redoing displays for all the new stock we have brought into the store, not to mention building displays with the 295 apple crates she just purchased.
